Grape and Wine Sciences covers the vine and its organs and integrates this knowledge in the scientific manipulation of the plant for the creation, in harmony with the environment, of sustainable product types which can be used to produce unique wines. Furthermore, it deals with the integration of a thorough understanding of the chemical and biological processes involved in the making of wine and brandy products in order to ensure the sustainability of the natural resources. SAGWRI is a research and postgraduate training institute that has a broad scope and mandate to operate inter-facultatively within SU, and in partnership with other national and international higher education, and public and private enterprises. SAGWRI focuses on Integrated Grape and Wine Sciences and Biotechnology and is linked to the Department of Viticulture and Enology within the AgriSciences faculty at SU
